2008 Glass Artist Information

For an application, email info@sunspots.com

We would like to invite you to join us in a unique art show devoted to glass.  The Virginia Hot Glass Festival is the only festival in our region where glass artists can come together, watch each other work, share ideas and problems, and sell their art to an audience especially there to see and buy glass art.  This will be the festival’s sixth year, and we are expanding our exhibit area to allow new artists to participate.  The show is held indoors at Sunspots Studios in Staunton, Virginia.

Please fill out the application, include your booth fee, sign, and mail or fax it back to us.

For an application, email info@sunspots.com

We will award cash prizes for best of show based on a piece of your choosing.

All participating artists will spend about 45 minutes each day demonstrating for the public in our hot shop or lamp-working studio.

Festival hours are Saturday, 9am to 6pm, and Sunday, 9am to 5pm.

At last year’s Festival, vendors such as Cutting Edge Products and Hot Block Tools provided tools and color for the participating artists to sample.   We are working on similar vendor participation this year.

Here is a brief listing of things you need to know and bring to this event.

Booth set up times:  All day Friday, April 25, until 10 pm

Saturday morning, April 26, 7am until opening at 9am.

Demonstration times:  Time slots will be given upon arrival.  Average time will be about 45 minutes/day.

Two complete breaks will be taken, one in the morning, and one in the afternoon to let visitors shop!

Saturday night party:  Plan on sticking around Sunspots after the show Saturday to drink, munch, and socialize with each other.  We will hold skill challenge contests for prizes donated by tool and supply vendors.

Contest Piece:  Be sure to bring a special piece to enter in the Festival Best-of-Show contest.

 Bringing tools

Hot Shop: Please be conservative in what you intend to create during your demo time.  I predict that there will be more than enough tools, pipes and basics, but if you have something you know that is quick and doesn’t take a long set up and doesn’t use too much marver/decoration area, bring anything that you want.  Short demo times will be the norm and space will get cramped in the hot shop.    Finding helpers for more involved work will be fun and easy to get.  We plan on having several tool vendors letting us try out all kinds of new tools and pipes, so unless you just can’t be without your favorite pipe or whatever, leave most things at home.  The pressure to make great finished work is not so high, so just have fun with the experimentation.

Torch Room: We will have two sizes of torches available for demo.  Bring anything else you need to create your work.

We recommend having someone cover your booth during demo/lunch times.

Lodging:  A complete list of lodgings is available on Staunton’s website (www.staunton.va.us).  Click on “For the Visitor”.  There are many B & B’s within walking distance of Sunspots that are in beautifully restored historic buildings.  The closest, Staunton Choral Gardens B & B (540/885-6556; www.stauntonbedandbreakfast.com), has rooms starting at $75 including breakfast.   The Belle Grae Inn (www.bellegrae.com; (888)541-5151) is also very close by, and they offer elegant rooms & suites, hot breakfast, and an elegant restaurant.

The Stonewall Jackson Hotel is also right downtown.  This 1920s hotel was restored to its past grandeur and reopened in 2005.  Phone (866) 860-0024; www.stonewalljacksonhotel.com.
